  4.  Type I supernovae are thought to
  5. occur in binary star systems, where a
  6. very small, very dense star known as
  7. a white dwarf orbits around a normal
  8. star. Under certain conditions the
  9. white dwarf may draw in matter
  10. from the normal star. If the white
  11. dwarfΓÇÖs mass approaches 1.4 times
  12. that of the Sun, a point known as the
  13. Chandrasekhar limit, the
  14. accumulation of extra mass may
  15. cause it suddenly and violently to
  16. collapse.
